NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY.
The following resolutions were adopted at the meeting of the University Council at Wellington on the 21st instant : Regulation No. 31 is hereby repealed. The sum of LI,OOO is hereby appropriated for the establishment of 50 scholarships of L‘2o each, for proficiency in any one of the following subjects Classics, mathematics, physical science, modern languages other than English, also history and English literature. No candidate shall be eligible for a scholarship to whom less than half the required number of marks shall be assigned. Scholarships in the several subjects may be held conjointly, Of the 50 scholarships, 13 shall be allotted to subject No. 1, 13 to subject No. 2, 12 to subject No. 3, and 12 to subject No 4, if there be that number of candidates who shall have attained the required number of marks. A scholarship shall become vacant by neglect on the part of the holder to attend any one of the Annual University Examinations, or through failure to pass such examination satisfactorily, unless the holder shall produce proof satisfactory to the Chancellor, that he was unable to attend through illness. The LI.OOO a year appropriated to scholarships shall be paid to a separate fund ; the savings on any year to be used to increase the number of scholarships in following years, and any sum unexpended out of the amount heretofore appropriated for scholarships, shall be paid over to such separate fund. The application for affiliation from the Auckland College was not entertained.
It was resolved on the motion of Mr Eol. leston that, on the termination of the present session, the Council shall adjourn to the first Wednesday in April, 1874. It was resolved that copies of the Univer* sity calendar of the minutes of the proceedings of the University Council in each year be supplied to the .affiliated institutions and other principal educational establishments, and to the public reading-rooms in each of the principal towns in New Z-aland, and that copies of the University calendar be furnished to booksellers in each town for sale. The Rev. J. C. Andrew was appointed Inspector of the affiliated institutions, and in case he should be unable to act, that the Chancellor be instructed to select some lit person willing to undertake the office. That the inspector so appointed be authorised to associate with himself an assistant inspector at each place where inspection is held, and that the remuneration of such assistant inspector be fixed at the rate of L2 2s per diem. Regulations were adopted for the course of study and annual examination; also for the general examination for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and for honor examinations.
