Drunkenness.— Ellen Andrews, charged with being drunk at 10.80 p.m, on the 24th iusfc., not appearing, was lined in the amount of her bail (40s), with the option of twentyfour hours’ imprisonment. Obscene Language.— George Bowring and Wm. Blavin were charged with making use of indecent language towards George Sheriff, at Kaikorai valley, on the 21st inst. Bowring was fined 40s, with the option of three days’ imprisonment; and Blavin, L 5 or seven days. Assault. —Ellen Finlay charged James Reid with assaulting and beating her on the 24th inst. Complainant said that she was told James Reid wanted to speak to her. She said she could not go, because she was engaged; and Jenny Reads, one of the girls, then said be wanted her to prove something, and she went. He knocked her (witness) down, slapped her in the face, and kicked her.—By defendant: She called him a liar; but she did not spit in his face, nor call him a loafer.—Defendant said she called him a loafer, and spat in his face twice, when he struck her in defence.—Jane Reade said defendant and complainant had a few words together, when the latter deliberately spat in bis face,—He was fined ss, with the option of six hours’ imprisonment. Bye-law Cases.— Martha B. Muir, for erecting two houses in Dowling street without giving notice to the City Council in writing, was fined 20s and costs ; Edward Hall and Thomas Thompson, for suffering their chimneys to be on fire, 2a 6d each, without costs ; charges against Lo Keoog, for allowing the company’s water to run to waste, and Francis Krull and Richard Evans, neglecting to clean their premises, were dismissed. .
