Wellington, April 23
Capt. Tucker, of thebaique Camille, died last night. The deceased was Avell known in the New Zealand trade. Mr E. G. Wright’s tender for the Rakaia to Southbridge railway in Canterbury, has been accepted. His tender was L 11,373. The Hon. Mr Fox addressed his constituents at Marton last night. A vote of confidence was passed, April 24 Sent 1.50 p.m.; received 4.3 p.m. A despatch from Earl Kimberley is published in reply to memorials from the Otago and New Zealand Universities for a Royal Charter to confer degrees. His Lordship docs not question but that the standard of education in their institutions is such as to entitle them to give degrees, but looking at the population and the circumstances of the Colony, ho refuses to advise the Queen to grant a charter to two or an indefinitely larger number of Universities in one Colony. He urges that to do so Avould bo to lower the value of degrees, and refuses to give Charter to cither, until, by address or otherwise, he is in possession of the views of the Legislature as t > Avhich University should have a charter.

Auckland, April 23
The Rangatira was driven by bad weather as far as the Poor Knights, and had to burn her boats and fittings to get back. The weather is still boisterous, and a large number of are Aviudbound. The steamer and ten other vessels were lying for refuge in Kawau yesterday. A largo Native meeting Avas held at Tokangamutu on the 28 th ult.

Mr Douglas, of Dunedin, is here, and it is reported that he is endeavoring, on behalf of a number of capitalists, to purchase the whole of the Blue Spur.
Nal’lrh, April 23,
Mr Backhand, M.H.K., has pwclnsed 13,000 acres at Tanpo, and leased 30,000 acres adjoining. A Napier firm is also negotiating for the purchase of 14,000 acres in the same district.
Waikouaiti, April 23
A carrier, named William M ‘Konzio, committed suicide this morning by hanging himself at accommodation house. The inquest was held to-day, and the folloAving verdict Avas returned That deceased committed suicide Avbilo in a state of temporary insanity caused by drink.”
