“ Labor and Wages in Few Zealand. —W. H. Barnes, hon. s crctary to the Working Men’s Committee, Christcliuich. Canterbury, New Zealand, and Kdmund Ford, the treasurer, have addressed a fetter to us. showing that from the present low rate of paid to mechanics, no less than from the high prices of rent and the necessaries of life, the Canterbury settlement is not one for emigrants, more particulary as the labor market is greatly overstocked, and large numbers are' out of employment. Agricultural laborers earn os per day, and handicraftsmen and mechanics from 8s to 10s per day. Coals are L(i per ton, and firewood L 3 3s per cord ; 11 mr, LI Os per 10’dbs. ; potatoes, Cs per cwt., and oatmeal, Is per lb. ; beef and pork, Sd ; mutton, 7d ; and bacon, Is 3d per lb. ; tea, 3s 31 ; coffee, 2s, and sugar, 8d per Ik ; milk, (5d per quart; butter, 2s, and cheese, Is 3d per lb. ; soap, 81; salr, 3d, and tobacco, 4s per lb. bent for a single man from 10a to 15s, and bond and lodging, without w r asbing. 1.1 os to LI lOs per week.”—Acmi/i/ herald, January 21, 1860.
