WASTE LAND BOARD.

A meeting of the Board was hcl 1 this day. Thera were present Messrs Strode (in the chair), Tolmie, Butterworth, and Clarke.

A letter from Mr Janies Cheeseman, chairman of the Black’s Progress Committee was re ad. It objected to the high unset price put upon the sections in the township of Qphir now gazetted for sale, and pointed out that in 1871 the township was advertised for sale at the upset price of L 5 per section, and therefore it was requested that the Board should reconsider the matter and adhere to the price formerly advertised. A telegram from the v ’uperintendent relative to the matter was a’so read. It was to the effect that, after long discussion with the parties interested, he had recommended that the sale should he proceeded with, but that sections 1, 2 and /, biock I; sections 3 and 7, block II ; and sections 3, 6, 7, and 8. block ,111, should be reserved for mining purposes. Ihe upset price, as fixed by the Warden, namely Ll2 10s per section, was affirmed, and the application of Mr Cheeseman was therefore refused. Mr John Meikle applied to have the section at the junction of Blyth and Langstono streets, Clyde, put up for sale. Ihe application was ngri ed to. Mr 11. C. Stratton applied on behalf of Mr 1). Banna*yne to purchase the unsold portions of block 25, Waihola township, at a reduced price from the present up«et price. It was shown that tho laud w as oifered ft-r sale a short time ago, but not competed for. The Board resolved that the upset price al ready fixed upon should not be altered. A letter from Mr William Black was read, stating that he had paid the deposit in anticipation of the purchase of forty acres of land in block 3, Clarendon district, a day after the time fixed, and the receiver of waste land revenue therefore refuse i to take it. He therefore prayed that, under the circumstances, the Board would make an order that the purchase money should still be received. The Board were of opinion that they had not power to deal with the matter, and resolved accordingly The appli,cation of Messrs Lllacott and TTcdditch, for a license for a jetty site near Pembroke, was granted. Messrs Gillies and Street, on behalf ot Mr P. B. Boult, applied for a lease of ten acres of tho township reserve, block 3, Mid Wakatip, for tho purpose of forjping a hop ground. The lease was granted, at a rental of 2s Od per acre j the lirst three years the lease to be bwt the ourtwy of

the last four years the land should be held by the lessee at the will of the Board, and be given up when required without any comoensati"n. The Board considered the land to be of special va’ue, in consequence of its luving be n reserved far a town h;p An application was made by Mr John Reid, on behalf of Mr E. Menlove, to purchase a stone reserve section on block 9, wamoko district. Mr Reid stated that the stone on the reserve was of no value for building purposes. Mr Strode thought that as there was but scant information before the Hoard on the matter, it would bo advisable to refer it to the ranger for report. The further consideration of the app'ieation was therefore adjourned im'il the 24th March. The application of Mr James Zenlcet to purchase sections 103, 104, 105, 10i3, and 124, block 1, Shotovi r district, now held under lease, was granted. Permission was given to Mr (1. Ludeman to erect a jetty opposite his fcllmomjcry at section 29, block 20, Sliotovcr district, on the usual terms.

A letter from Mr Thomas Perkins, trustee in the insolvent estate of D. S. Lawlor, was read objecting to the renewal of the 1 cense to occupy land at Mussel Bay, on the grounds that Lawlor had included tiic former license in his insolvency schedule. The Board declineil t > interfere in the matter.

Mr John O’Callaghan applied for protection for six months of a piece of ground near Carclrona.to enable him to further prospect it for coal. The application was granted. A further report from the ranger, relative to the application of Mr James Marshall to purchase sections 11 and 12, block 15, Maungatua district, was considered. It showed that the settlers in the district, with the exception of two, were opposed to the sale. The application was therefore refused. Mr Grant, on behalf of the Warders of the Traquair hundred, requested the Board to inform the Wardens what powers they had to act in the case of rrnlicensed cattle running on the hundred. The Board replied that it could express no opinion on the subject Mr Hugh MHntyre applied for a preemptive right of 640 acres on run 131, under the 103 rd see ion of tire Waste Lands Act. 'lire app ication was granted. Mr John Reid applied to purchase section 13, block 5, Otakia district, to enable him to complete his fencing. The land he said was comparatively valueless, and the timber on it was only fit for firewood. A report from the rang r was read, showing that some of tbosettlcrsin the district objected to the sale. ’! he permission to purchase, therefore, was r. fused, hut a lease of the land for ten years was granted, at a rental of 1.5 per annum, and with the stipulation that the right of the settlers to the bush on the section be not in any way rostiictcd. the Board considered the land of value on account of its having been so long withheld from sale. The application of Mr John M‘Lean to purchase a portion of the bush reserve on B’ock 1, Wyndham district, in area 33 acres. The matter was referred to the ranger for report.
