CRICKET.
A scratch match was played on the Dunedin Club ground on Saturday afternoon between sides chosen by Messrs Macfarlan 51ml Tait, when some good practice was obtained. The fielding was not up to the mark, but the batting and bowling were pretty good. Some better scoring than usual was made. Macfarlan contributing 52, Brown 11, Tait 36, and Thomson 20 for their respective sides. We understand that the return match between the first eleven of the Citizens’ Club and an eleven chosen from the different banking establishments in town has been arranged to come off next Saturday. There are some good players in both teams, and an interesting game may be looked forward to. The Bankers’ team will be chosen from the following:—Cairns, Dignam, J, Fulton, F. J. Ful: ton, Gillies. Hellicar, Jobson, Macdonald,Tait, Thomas, Vickerman, Winter, and Winfield. Mr Beal will stand as umpire The Bankers are requested to turn out for practice at least two or three afternoons during the week, as the chances are that they will have to contend against a very strong eleven on this occasion They should endeavor to play together as much as possible, if they are desirous of making anything like a creditable show. The match on Saturday between the Albion’s and Citizens’ first elevens was a close one, but the former labored under the disadvantage of being short handed, and consequently had to play with a couple of their second eleven. The ground was in a most indifferent state, rendering the bowling unpleasantly bumpy. For example, Glen received a ball from Sutcliffe fair in the face, and bad to retire very badly hurt. The Citizens, we believe, pay a ground-keeper, and should insist on being provided with a good wicket for match playing. The North Dunedin Club went to the wickets first, and made 60 runs before they were disposed of. Kirk, Thomson, and Sutcliffe got into double figures, but the two last mentioned were the only ones who exhibited anything like play. For the Citizens, Allen played a good innincs of 22, hut was out in the second over, and would have been given so if the umpire had been appealed to. The following are the scores
