Thu Dav. (Before his Worship the Mayor.) Drunkenness.—-Robert Crews was fined ss, or in default, 24 hours’ imprisonment, with h' l'd labour. Attempted Suicide. —Philip Wakefield was broiglit up on remand charged with the above offence. Defendant said he tvas unconscious of what he was doing when he committed the act; lie had been losing money since Christmas, and this no doubt caused him to take to drink. He was sorry for what he had done, and would not attempt to take a\yay hj s lile again. Bound over on his own recognisance of Lot), to keep the peace for six months Bye-law Casks.—J. P. Hepburn- was charged with obstructing the thoroughfare, having his waggon on the Main North Koad. Mr Stewart appeared for defendant, and con tended a master could not be held responsible for the acts of a servant. His Worship being incfined to favor this view, dismissed the case, remarking that the police were under a difficulty in a case like this, as they had to prove tliat either the vehicle was left by the master’s instruction, or, if the servant committed the act, it warn'd have to be shown clearly that it was not done as a necessity. —George Watt, for not having proper reins to his dray was fined 60s. and costs. The Beach saying it was bad enough on the fpaiu roads, but it became much worse on thickly populated poads, as it might cause serious accident, resulting in tfie death of many persons ; and it must be put a stop to. 1 he best way to do so was by inflicting heavy penalties.—John Stait, allowing a quantity of building material to rein fin in Moray place, was fined 2s fid and costs ; Michael Levy, allowing the Company's water to run to waste, 2s fid. without costs ; Robert Murray, neglecting to clean his premises, was lined in a like penalty; Mrs Oreigh, allowing her cow to wander, 10s and costs ; Keuben Hart, neglecting to clean his premises, denied the charge, and said the yard did not belong to him -, hut a witness (Murray) proved that it did. At the instigation of defendant, the case was remanded till to-morrow, to allow his Worship to examine the place.
