THE CITY VALUATIONS.
To the Editor, Sir, —Equally with your correspondent “ Argus” was I surprised to observe from the report of the City Council’s last meeting, that My Councilor Mercer bad been guilty of tho gross impropriety of voting on the valuation of bis own property, in point of fact voting (or endeavoring to do so) the sum of sixtyeight pounds stg. to bimse.f. If I am not very much mistaken, there is a clause in the Municipal Act of 1865 expressly forbidding this, and it is somewhat surprising the Mayor didnotpreveutit, but possibly he wasdeterre.l from doing so, from the fear that if heeded, jt would have been attributed to personal animus It is the more surprising Mr Mercer should have acted in this way, when it is considered that ho is always prating about bis honesty and desire for lair dealing. Had Mr Fish been guilty of a similar thing, your paper would doubtless have been Hooded with letters on tbe subject, denouncing him in strong terms, and your contemporary, the Daily Times, would probably have brought out ale der, showing the corrupt nature of the Mayor. But this is, I suppose, simply the difference between Tweedledum and Tweedledee.— 1 am, &c., Ratepayer, Dupedin, January 1?.
