THE LATE FIRE.

To the tJdilor, Sir, —I have observed in the columns of your paper that, as a consequence of the late tire in George street, the result to one of the sufferers is likely to be more than ordinarily disastrous, particularly as the person referred to is a widow, and has to support by her own exerdons a family of small children, I refer tp the case of Mrs Algie. lam not aware that a subscrip ion has been started for her relief; but, in the hope that there may be, I beg to enclose you the sum of two guineas, which you will please to apply to such purpo e.—lam, &c., H, S. Fish Jnr. Dunedin, January 17-

To the Editor

Sir, —Once, when au American was expressing great sympathy lor a case of distress, he was asked “ How many dollars he sympathised.” Now, a great many have professed to sympathise with Mrs Algie iu her trouble, and 1 should be glad to see that it exten ed a good way down into the trouser’s pocket. 1 am glad to see that Mr Glendinini/, although a loser, has headed the list, his Worship the Mayor is also a sub scriber, and I am sure b >th gentlemen will be happy to receive subscriptions, A list will be also laid on the Athenaeum table, that those who wish may contribute. Ido not believe in subscription lists poked under the no.ses of all ami sundry, and shall be glad to see that the public is willing to help without a resort to this offensive practice.—l am, &c., SUBSCRIBER, Dunedin, January 17, L c 73.
