Francis Muir, allowing one cow r to wander on the Town Bolt, near the Southern Cemetery, was lined 2s (id and costs ; .Robert jXealc and James M‘Kay, plying for hire with hackney coaches without a license, 2s 6d and costs ; Henry Boxwell, cutting three fern trees on the Town Belt, near (Juecn street, os. NEGLECTED CHILDREN, David l)acr,e Ross and William Gilchrist Ross, were charged, on the information of
their mother, with being neglected children. Mr Bathgate, on behalf of Mr Britton, opposed their being sent to the Industrial School, saying that the Benevolent Asylum was the proper place for them. The facts elicited were these : The mother was a single woman ; the father of the younger child was working on the railway near Tokomairiro, and the father of the elder had left the Province. The woman bad applied for shelter at the Gaol last evening, saying she was homeless. The Bench said the children were not neglected within the meaning of the Ordinance. If they could thev would have sent them to the Industrial School. 'I he mother, and not the children, was to blame. Mr Bathgate said the publication of this case in the papers might induce some one to offer to take the children out of charity. He hoped some of the philanthropic societies would look to the case. Mr Ward hinted that two or three rooms in the old police barracks, Princes street south, might be made available for women coming from the country. It was not the children who ought to be punished, but the mother for her immorality and improprieties.
