This Day. (Before E. ff. Ward and James Brown, Escjrs., j.P. ? s.) DRUNKENNESS. James Hickey was fined 10s, or twentyfour hours’ imprisonment. VAGRANCY. Martha Howie, whose case was dealt with a few days ago, when she was ordered to be seut back to her parents by the Mayor, but having reqm sted to be allowed to remain in town and take a situation, was now charged with vagrancy, having been found in a brothel. The Bench said she evidently did not mean to work nor return home, and, on account of her age, they did not like to send her to gaol to be banded with criminals, and ordered her to bo sent home.—David Mason, who was found by Constable Booncy in the house of one Lizzie Bowen, was charged with being unable to give a good account of his being in the said house for a lawful purpose. Mr M'Keay, who appeared for accused, said, according to the 4th sub-section of section 2 of the Vagrancy Act, 1866, prisoner should have been charged with not being able to give a good account of himself, and also for not having visible lawful means of support. The warrant only mentioned the first; he, therefore, submitted'fhere was no offence. Case dismissed with a caution. BYE-LAW CASES, Win, Marshall and Jas Simpson, the former for allowing five head of cattle to stray, and the latter one head, were fined is per head and costs.—William Newborne, allowing the chimney of his house to take fire, was lined 2s 6d and costs.
