PORT CHALMERS TOWN COUNCIL.
The regular meeting of the Town Council was held last evening in the Town Hall, the Mayor and Councillors Bolton, Morgan, M 'Kiun- n, M iller, and Murray were present, and the following business was transacted ; That the opinion of the Town Solicitor be obtained respecting the railway crossing Wickliffe terrace; and that the Lighting Committee be empowered to sign the amended agreement for the supply of gas. A letter from the Surveyor, complaining of language used by Councillor Bolton, was followed by that Councillor denying what was alleged to have occurred outside the Council, and apologised for any hasty language that might have been used by him in Council during the heat of debate. Councillor Miller asked to know the expence incurred in printing the proposed byelaws.
Councillor Murray replied that it had been submitted to contract; and that that of the Evening Star, which had a very large circulation in the town, being the low( sfc had been accepted. Bye-law No, 1 was then adopted. Byelaw No. 2 was left over until Wednesday evening next. Councillor Murray wished to know Councillor Miller’s reason for not signing certain accounts. Councillor Miller explained, but the reasons given were considered unsatisfactory, on which Councillors M'Ktnnon, Easton, and Morgan expressed their opinions that Councillor Miller should retire from the Works Committee. The Mayor briefly pointed out the importance of members of this Committee working in harmony. The following tenders were accepted: - Mr W, Nash, L 8 18s for footpaths in Beach street; Mr H. M'Kinlay, L 3 19s 2d per chain for fence in Wickliffe terrace. Councillor Murray gave notice of motion for next meeting, “ That a memorial be forwarded to his Excellency the Governor to empower the Corporation to annex all reclaimed lands or lands about to be reclaimed within the boundaries of the town ; and that the Town Clerk be instructed to write to his Honor the Superintendent respecting bis promise of granting prison labor; also to respectfully inform him that a hulk had been provided, which awaited the inspection of the authorities; also that his Honor be pleased to appoint trustees for the sinking fund.” The erection of a public pound on the former site was agreed on, and that the appointment of lire inspectors be deferred to next meeting.
