Napier, Octobers. Particulars of the disturbance which occurred at Waiapu, some time since, have been received. A quarrel having occurred about some pigs, Paora Henga Apu destroyed lands belonging to Wiremu Kahai. The dispute first arose respecting boundary land. Wiremu shot two pigs b longing to the opposition, and the other party retailiated. Wiremu and four men lay in ambush next day, when four men belonging to Paora’s party were seen crossing the river to catch horses, Wiremu’s party killed one of them, and the others t scaped. The body lay on the spot till the following morning, when it was buried a neutral party. Both parties have the river crossing stopped, and a number of horses shot. Great excitement prevails all along the East Coast. The man who was shot b-longed to the Ngatiporou. Ropata demands that the murderer shall be given up.
Auckland, October 7. A false alarm of fire, raised at the Theatre on Saturday night while Miss Rose Evans was playing Hamlet to a crowded house, caused a panic, which, however, was checked before any injury was done. One lady was thrown in a fit of hysterics with fright, A good instance of Maori cunning occurred at Coromandel, where a Maori chief, against whom a writ for debt bad been issued, conducted the bailiff twice through a Maori encampment in search of himself; and the bailiff returned to Court unsuccessful, while the Maori took his departure by boat for a settlement at a distance.
Wellington, October 7. The Criminal Sittings opened to day. There are six cases for trial—viz., arson, attempted suicide, stealing from a dwelling, horse stealing, embezzlement (two charg-s), cutting and wounding. For the last-men-tioned offence, John Brown got three months’ hard labor. It is understood that the Governor has just refused Mr Stafford’s request for a dissolution. It is expected the Ministry will resign to-day.
