Tms Day! (Before His Worship the Mayor and Dr Harding, J.P.) DRUNKENNESS. Thomas Carle, Harry Eden, and Harry M ‘Coll, charged with this offence, were fined ss, or 24 hours’ imprisonment, OBSCENE LANGUAGE. William Roberts, charged with using obscene language, was fined L 5, or three months’ imprisonment.

ASSAULT. John Cooper charged George Wallace with assaulting him ou the Kaikorai Road on the 26th September. Air Catomore for complainant ;Mr Harris for the defendant. It appeared from the evidence that complainant and bis son were proceeding to town on the said evening, when they met defendant driving his dray. Defendant said, -‘Good evening, Cooper.” Cooper replied civilly, when defendant, without the slightest provocation, struck complainant in the face with his fist, at the same time using bad language, James Cooper, son of complainant, corroborated his father’s evidence,—Mr Harris pointe i out to the Bench that the information was incorrect, no assault having been committed on the day named. His Worship said the objection was fatal. Case dismissed, on payment of costs, LI Is, NE CHEQUES’ QUARRELS. Catherine Hammond was charged by Richard Miles with assaulting him in Stafford street, throwing dirt at him, and spitting in his face. His Worship remarked that apparently this was one of those cases which were constantly coming before the Court, and as the evidence was not sufficient to substantiate the charge of assault, he would dismiss the case. BYE-LAW CASES, Thomas Hudson was charged with allowing the chimney of his house to take fire. Case dismissed, on pa} ment of costs. Mrs Fitzsimmons, charged with allowing two cows to stray on St. David street, was fined 2s 6d John Mitchell, charged with allowing three cows to stray on St. David street, was fined 5s and costs.
