CITY COUNCIL.
There was a fall attendance of Councillors at last night's meeting, when the following business was transacted : Messrs Chaplin and Co. wrote asking per* mission to make the corner of Prinees and High streets, the starting place for tbeir southern coaches. The proposal was strongly opposed by Mr Barnes, who alluded to the danger to pedestrians of a six-horse coach starting from such a busy part of the City; and condemned the scenes which were now enacted in defiance of the law, in the struggle by the opposition coaches for passengers. He said women were “ collared” in a disgraceful way and almost forced into the coaches indeed, if his wife had been treated as he saw one wotaan treated, he should have knocked the mwn down. Mr Mercer thought the danger to passengers would be lessened by the coach starting from opposite Mr.Myers’, tobacconist, as applied for, and supported a proposal to grant permission during the summer. Mr Walter pointed out, if that were agreed to, the cabmen, in common justice, might be allowed to start from where they pleased. Mr Neale endorsed the observations of the last speaker. The amendment of Mr Merper was carried by the casting vote of the Mayor, Mr Barnes then got up, and vigorously condemned the action taken, which was simply setting at naught the action of the Works Commiitee, after the matter had been refesred to it, with power to act. His proposition to again refer it to that Committee was negatived; and his amendment that Princes street be made Chaplin and Co.’s sole stand, ruled out ©f order. He theu gave notice for next meeting, that cabmen be allowed to start from aqy part of tbe city. The reports pf the Public Works and Reserves Committees were adopted. Thirty-six applications were received for the office of assistant clerk, and Mr Falconer was appointed. The Water Works Committee reported having, with the City Solicitor, considered the provisions of the Municipal Corporations Water.Works Bill, 1872, as lately introduced into the House by Mr Vogel. A telegram had been forwarded to Mr Bathgate, stating several alterations deemed to be desirable in the Bill prior to its becoming law, in order to its being made applicable to Dunedin. The Mayor said he had received the following telegram from Mr Bathgate;— *• Amendments will be attended to. Bill repealing last year’s Borrowing Act, and enabling Dunedin to borrow LIOO,OOO under General Water Works Act, introduced today b me, read first time ; second reading fixe I for to-morrow.” He thought from this tuat the only obstruction to the Corporation getting the Water Works was likely to be removed, and hoped that the Iran- fer would ere long be accomplished. The Finance Committee reported that it considered the hawkers' fees sufficiently moderate, and that they be adhered to ; and that accounts amounting to L 538 7s 5d had been passed. 'jibe Special appointed tp en? qutre intfcf the mannerin which the Citizens* Roll for the years 1872-3 had been compiled, and also as to whether any alteration was necessary as regards completing such roll, reported;—“ The present roll has been compiled in this, as iu previous years, strictly in compliance with the Ordinance. As to whether or not it may be desirable to obtain. some alteration of the provisions of the Ordinance which gu : de the Town Clerk in preparing the roll, your committee recommend that the select committee already appointed to consider the Municipal Ordinance and what alterations therein are desirable, should be requested to consider the matter in cpn junction with then; otjier la’pours.;!—Adopted,! 11 11 ’• ’•
