THE VOLUNTEERS.
The opening match of the season was fired this morning at the Anderson’s Bay .Range, b-twcen officers and noncommissioned officers and the gunners of the Lunedin Artillery, the conditions being seven shots at ranges of 200 and GOO yards ; Wimbledon targets and position ; Government rifles and ammunition ; no sighting shots, &c. The average is very fair considering the small amount of practice the teams have had, and as usual fortune favored the “detachment. Lieut Muir, with 44 points, is the highest on the officers side, and Gunner Ball, 39, is the highest sjorrr for the Gunners. The following are the scores : —■
I The North Diumdip Cadet Germany was inspected by Major Atkinson, wlio, after the parade, expressed himself highly gratified with the progress the boys had made under the instruction of Staff-Sergeant M ‘Pherson. Messrs M’Oallum and Eustace wire appointed lieutenant and sub-lieutenant respectively.
