Princess Theatre.—The management is determined to provide novelties for its patrons. To-night thers is to be a complete change of programme ; the burlesque of “ Cinderella ” is to be preceded by ‘‘Dick Turpin” and “We all have our little faults.” Such a good bill ought to draw a good house. Immigration. The following are the trades and businesses of the immigrants per sliip Hydaspes Laborers, 12 ; carpenters, 3 ; farm laborers.. 4 ; shepherds, 2 ; weavers, 1 ; butchers, 1 ; masons, 1 ; excavators, 1 ; gardeners, 1 ; female cook, 1 ; female servants, 3") ; laundress, 1 ; blacksmith, I ; miller, 1 ; nurse, 1. Mayor’s Court. — At this Court, this morning, Henry Hell was fined on, and M;u v Thompson, an old offender, 40s, or 14 days’ hard labor, for drunkenness. The latter was also sentenced to three months imprisonment for being a habitual drunkard. His Worship the Mayor and James Brown, Esq., J. 8., were the prodding Magistrates.
Mutual Improvement Society.— We understand that this session of the Mutual Improvement Society is drawing to a close. The last lecture of the scries will be delivery 1 by the Lev. Alex. Beid on “ Genesis and Geology,'’ on Tuesday evening, in the Hall below the Atheiuc mi. We have no doubt the public will show their appreciation of the successful efforts made by this .Society during the past year in providing them with so many intellectual treats by lining the Hall on this occasion.
Buie. —A lire broke out lust evenin':, between seven and eight o’clock, on the farm of Mr John Low, near Spring Bank, Taicri. A stack of straw was dis overed on tie, and hut for prompt energy used in ebceking communication with the surrounding stacks of corn, combined with the favorable direction of the wind, the whole, build-
mgs included, would have inevitably been destroyed. No clue to the origin of the fire is known. It is apprehended to be the work of an incendiary.
Ball. —A ball, tendered to Mrs Hainan by the adult pupils attending her dancing academy, took place in Bt. George’s Hall, last evening. There was a large attendance, The music was provided by Mr Lack, and Messrs Donaldson and Galloway were the caterers. Dancing was kept up with great zest till an early hour this morning.
Municipal. There was a good muster of ratepayers of Leith Ward, at the Caledonian Hotel, Great King-streak, last evcsiing, the meeting having been called by advertisement “in pursuance of a resolution passed at a meeting of ratt-payers on August 10. The business was “to take into consideration the conduct of Councillor Thoneman as representative of Leith Ward.” Mr 11. H. Leary was voted to the chair. Some of those present desired to know who had advertised the meeting, but the information was not supplied. Then it was suggested that Mr Thonoman should be asked to answer any specific charge that might be brought against him. There was a good deal of discussion as to what mode of procedure was to be pursued under the circumstances ; but a definite nositiou was ultimately submitted by Mr GUon, who moved that the ratepayers had confidence in Mr 1 honcmau. I hat feeling seemed to be shared by most present, and the resolution on being put was carried by an overwhelming majority, Mr Thoueruan afterwards gave some explanations, which appeared to give entire satisfaction. Otago Rifle Association. —The annual meeting of the Otago Rifle Association was held at Wain’s Hotel, on Friday evening—Lieut. Muir in the chair. The Hon Secretary’s report was adopted, as also the Treasurer’s balance-sheet, which showed a balance on hand of L 9 18s lOd. Lieut.Colonel Cargill was re-elected President, and Mr W. J, M. Larnach elected VicePresident for the ensuing year, Gunner Ogilvio was elected Treasurer, in place of Capt. Macfarlaud, resigned. After discussion, it was resolved that a paid Secretary and collector be appointed. Owing to the difficulty experienced in obtaining a quorum to attend the meetings of the Council, it was resolved that tha Council of the Association should consist of one representative from each company, alang with the following gentlemen :—Lieut. Muir, Ensign Pell, Ensign M‘K(?nzic, P.O, Clayton, and Bergt. Cowie. A vote of thanks to the late Hon. Secretary and Treasurer, and the usual vote to the chair, terminated the proceedings.
