THE BOSTON JUBILEE.
■\Y© gave last week the telegraphic account of the first two days’ performances at the great Boston musical festival. This is the account of the third day’s proceedings The third day’s Jubilee was devoted to Germany. The Colosseum was well filled, the German element predominating. The programme included the chorale from Luther, “A Strong Castle is our Lord.” Wagner’s overture from Tannhauscr, Mendelssohn’s chorus, “ Yet doth the Lord.” The aria “Evaria,” sung by Peschka-Lentner; “ Farewell to the Forest,” and Strauss’s Morgenblatte Waltz, conducted by Strauss, and the piano solo by Franz Bend el, were all finhly rendered, and elicited great applause. The appearance of the band of Kaiser Fritz’s Grenadier Regiment greated great enthusiasm. Herr Sa-e led it through several selections. The German Union Hymn, dedicated to the Emperor of Germany, was sung by the grand chorus, with an organ and band accompaniment. The German Imperial cornet quartette performed several selections, which were received with great applause. Franz Abt directed the performance of his ballad, “When the Swallows Homeward Fly,” at the conclusion of which the audience rose and cheered several minutes. An anvil chorus, with all the accompaniments, followed, and the concert concluded with the hymn, “ Kingdoms and Thrones,” with full chorus and all accompaniments. Mr Gilmore has certainly magnificent notions of the money value of music. Here, aye are told, ho |has offered Mile. Tiotjens 14,800 to sing, .during the Boston Festival, two pieces of music each day for twelve consecutive days—that is L2OO a song, for about 1000 dollars. We have been trying to determine whether any singing by anybody could be worth this—whether this would not be paying too dearly for the whistle, so to speak—whether the highest notes would not be too high at such a price ; but observing further that Mile. Tietjens has declined the offer, we have concluded to think no more of the matter.
