All they got was L2 4s 7d, and some papers of no use to them.
Princess Theatre. There was a change of programme last evening, while the attendance was very good. The company appeared in the comedy of Who Speaks First?” which was very spiritedly played. We did not see the whole of the Japanese entertainment, but noticed the trick with the umbrella, and the amusing tigbt-rope performance of one of M. Ferrari’s monkeys. City Council. —There was a meeting of the Council last evening, but very little business was done. A petition ivas read asking that the Caversham cab-stand might be removed from in front of Messrs Briscoe and Co.’s.—Notices of motion relative to the removal of tolls were given by Councillors Barnes and Neale.—Mr Ramsay wanted to bring up the subject of the telegrams alleged to have been sent North in the name of the Town Clerk, but was not allowed to proceed, Mr Barnes and Mr Walter raising points of order, which were decided against Mr Ramsay by the chairman (Mr Mercer) Mr Ramsay then gave notice of his intention to call a meeting of the Council to consider the matter.

Burns v. the Otago and Southland Company, wan a motion for leave to pay money into Court, which, after argument, was refused with costs.
Plummekania. The ingenuity of the Daihj Times is astonishing. Having exhausted its stock of reliable information as to the doings and capture of Plummer, it treats its readers this morning to a column of his thoughts and sayings. If even half of it had been true —which it is not—we wonder very much whether the public cared to know what Plummer said to this man or to that, or who he parsed in the street, or who he did not. Perhaps he scraped an acquaintance with our contemporary’s reporter during one of his nocturnal visits. The column of twaddle in the Times this morning bears the impress of Plummer having been interviewed; and wo arc content to leave with our contemporary the credit of publishing everything Plummer says, and thus gratifying the morbid de-ire of a scoundrel to become notorious.
Fire Brigade. —The regular monthly practice of the Dunedin Volunteer fire Brigade was held last evening, liist in Oeoi’gestrect and llanover-streets, then by the station. trouage of the Brigade to an entertainment to be held at the Masonic Hall on the 23rd inst. in aid of the Funds of the above institution. The Brigade’s patronage was unanimously granted, the brigade to meet on that evening at the station at 7.30 p.m. in undress uniform. A donation of 57 volumes of very uaeful'aud instructive works was presented to the library of the Brigade by Mr Thomas Osborne, a very old member.
