BISHOP MORAN AND THE WAKATIP ELECTION.

To the Editor. Sir, —In your issue of last evening I find the following sentence, for which you make yourself responsible, viz.“ Judged by the light of recent events in these Colonies— Bishop Goold’s pastoral in Victoria, and Bishop Moran’s action at the Wakatip election—the Galway election and the judgment of Judge Keogh therein, to which reference was made in the Suez telegrams, present some features of interest.” This is not the first time a public journal has felt itself justified in mentioning my name in connection with the late Wakatip election. Hitherto, not caring to come unnecessarily before the public, I have not taken any notice of what I cannot regard in any other light than that of an unjustifiable use of my name; but the persistence with which public writers reiterate what I suppose they imagine to be a serious charge agaipst me, induces me to ask you to be so good as to state publicly what is the meaning of the words—“ And Bishop Moran’s action at the Wakatip election ” ? By inserting this in your next issue you •will oblige f P. Moran, Bishop of Dunedin. August 7, 1872, [As Bishop Moran must understand that the action referred to is that of using his influence to return a certain candidate, the shortest way to put a stop to the “charge” is to deny its truth, if it be untrue.]— Ed. RS.
