Mayor’s Court.— There were only two cases in the Mayor’s Court this morning. B. Perry, landlord of the Alhambra Hotel, was fined 20s and costs for assaulting a man named Franklyn Clisby. Charles Pearce, for neglectiug to remove building material from Princes street, was fined 2s fid and costs.

Larrikinism. There has been a fresh outbreak of larrikinism at Oamaru. Not content with cutting life lines at the jetty, burning the casks for making concrete blocks for the dock works, and smashing windows, the juvenile pests of Oamaru have been stealing powder from the local magazine in large quantities and igniting grass fires near the town, to the danger of the houses.

The Circus.—There was a very large attendance at the re-opening performance at the Circus last evening. Daring the interval that has elapsed since the previous performance, considerable improvements have been made in the building, which now has sustantial Wooden sides, and possesses other adjuncts to the comfort of visitors. The performance last evening was highly appreciated by the large number of visitors present. An entire change of performance is announced for to-night, and an afternoon performance for Saturday next. Princess Theatre. Foes ” which is an old friend under a new name,' was played last evening to a moderate house. Miss Anstead as Beatrice Goldsworthy, played with her accustomed carefulness ; and the principal male characters found representations in Messrs Musgrave, Thorpe, and O’Brien; although 'the latter was far to demonstrative at times. The afterpiece was the musical commedietta of “ The King’s Card ner, pieces will be repeated this evening, and to-morrow night “ Time and Tide ” will be re-produced, Dunedin Rifle Club. —The committee of the above club met last evening, when it was decided that the next match should take place on the loth June. The ranges and conditions will be the same as in the last match, viz., seven shots at 200 and 500 yards, standing at the 200, any position at the 500 yards. ; Wimbledon targets. Presentation. —The members of JSfc Patrick’s brass band, at a meeting on Monday night last, held at their practice room, presented Mr John D. Grifliu with a handsome cornet by Antoine Courtois, as a slight recognition of his valuable services to the band for the past two years. Mr Griffin, in a few appropriate words, thanked the members for their very handsome present. The cornet bore the following inscription—“ Presented by the members of St Patrick’s brass band to Mr John D. Griffin, as a token of their esteem for his past services as leader of the band. ” We are informed that the cornet cost Ll2 12s, and is one of Antoine Courtois’s best.

The Police.—The men who yesterday refused to go on duty were informed at the parade at six o’clock that they had then to decide whether they woild remain in the force or leave it; and they adopted the latter course. The protection of the town last night was entrusted to the four sergeants who remained on duty, three of the Corporation’s officers, and a sergeant, and three warders from the gaol. To-day the men out on strike were dismissed from the force ; and eight special constables were this afternoon sworn in by the Mayor. We are informed that the Executive to-day telegraphed to the General Government for assistance, and that the Colonial Secretary has replied that a sergeant and detachment of the Armed Constabulary will he sent down by the Kangitoto, which leaves Wellington to-morrow, and that they will remain pending the re-organisation of the force.

His Worship the Mayor, in reply to a requisition numerously signed by merchants and others, has convened a public meeting of the citizens to be held this evening in tire M asonic Hall at 7 o’clock, to consider what steps ought to be taken to secure the protection of the City.

We have to acknowledge the receipt from “Sympathiser” and a few friends of subscriptions amounting to Ll 10s, in aid of the Young Relief Fund. The subscriptions now being collected for Mr Young are to be understood as being for the invalid’s use, and not that of bis family. Mr Morton Travers and Miss Surtees, assisted by amateurs, will give an entertainment in the Masonic Hall to-morrow (Friday) evening. An interesting programme has been prepared, and, as it is announced for one night only we have little doubt the Hall will be well filled, Mr Travares leaves on Saturday for Tokomairiro, where he plays on Tuesday. He also intends visiting Tuapeka and the Cluthp.

The hundredth monthly meeting of the Permanent Building Society of Otago will be held at the offices of the Society, Temple Chambers, Princes street, on Friday evening next, at 7.

The Battery of the Dunedin "Volunteer A rtiljery will parade for Gun Drill in undress uniform, without arms, at the Gunshed to-morrow (Friday) evening at 7.30. We call the attention of our Tort Chalmers friends to Mr De Maus’s Fiji entertainment that is advertised for to-morrow.
