TRADESMEN’S RACES.

The attendance on the course at the time appointed for starting was only thin ; which is perhaps attributable to the lowering clouds which, during the morning threatened rain. As the day wore on the number of psrso is on the ground rapidly increased, and by the time the first race took place there was a promise of a large afternoon gathering. Although the time appointed for the first race was 11.30, it was considerably after I‘2 before the horses took their places at the starting point. The ground, though rather soft, was not in bad condition, It was, however, slightly heavy, which was m favor ot horses gifted with strength rather than speed. _ The first race was the Handicap Hurdle Eace of 20 entrance 1 sov,, li miles, over seven flights of hurdles 3ft 6 iu. Mr E. Pritchard’s Don Pedro, aged, (Goodman) 1 Mr K. Wylie’s b g Forbury, 5 year* 9at 71b (Barron) 2 Four started — Don Pedro, Tvildare, Forbury, and Southern Chief, Pilgrim having been scratched. After one false stait the horses got away well together, Krbury taking the lead, followed closely by Southern Chief Kildare refused the second hurdle, and consequently lost every chance of winniig. In the second round, in taking the hurdle next the starting post, he ' brew his rider. It was very evident after the tirst round that Don Pedro bad it all his own way. He easily passed all the rest of the horses, took every hurdle coolly and quiet y, and came in a winner by a quarter of a mile. Forbury curried 25lbs overweight. The mare went steadily throughout the race, and never broke, though frequently headed by riders off the course at a gallop. Time slow. Tradesman's Handicap, of 25 sovs; 1A miles.

Eight started —Little Fell, Bose, Merryman, and Kildare having been scratched. The horses got olf well together, and on passing the Grand Stand a sheet would have covered six of them. Gradually they singled ofl, until Bobby Burns took the lead, and eime in the winner by several lengths.

The horses that were entered were Mr Ebssbotbam’s Rose, Mr Scott’s Turpin, Mr Stephenson’s Kildare, Mr Hutton’s Faddy, Mr Hastie’s Jenny, Mr Morris’s Cleopatra, Mr McDonald’s Misfortune, Mr Gardner’s German Louis, Mr Dowse’s Gamecock. Paddy came in first, Jenny second, and Gamecock, tbird.
