THE VOLUNTEERS.
The second competition for the North Danedin Rifle Company’s belt and money prizes took place last Monday, at the North Dunedin range The conditions vrere : Ranges 300, 500, and 700 yards ; five shots at each range. The day was very un favorable, rain falling in showers, and a strong gale blowing. Subjoined are the scores of the prizetakers in the two competitions on both days :
The Governor has accepted the services of the Invercargill Volunteer Artillery. It would seem that the splendid score of Sapper Earle, Christchurch Cadets, 87 out of a possible 100, for the cadet championship of the Col >ny, has been beaten by a Wanganui cadet, who made the magnificent total of 94. It is said that even if Earle had not been
beaten be would have lost tbe prize, as be was two or three days over the maximum age for cadets when he fired. The returns of the Wanganui firing have not yet come te hand ; but when they do they will certainly be worth inspection.
