DEPUTATION.

His Worship the Mayor waited upou His Honor the Superintendent to-day, as deputy from the City Council for two purposes : Ist. To represent that the Corporation had at a recent sale bought a section of ground in Forth Place, and that as the Government had not paid over to the Corporation LIOOO voted by the Provincial Council, the amount due for the ground might fairly he set off, as against that purchase. Hi.s Honor promised to bring the matter under the notice of the Executive. 2. His Worship, on behalf of the Corporation and inhabitants of the city, protested very strongly against the erection of check bars or other toll bars within short distances of the city. He pointed out that it was bad po'icy; but if those already existing could not be removed, at any rate no more .should he allowed. The bar at Kensington had been placed on a road in which the Provincial Government had not expended a shilling, and he thought it would bo much better in the iiiteJests of the city to allow the very few evasions of toll that were likely to occur than to place such vexations imposts in the way. Not a baker’s, butcher’s, or grocer’s cart cart could go through without having to pay the toll)'ate, and in consequence it became a heavy ta.x upou distributors. He did not know of any other place where toll bars were allowed within so short a distance of the city. His Honor entirely concurred with the views expressed by t e Mayor, and considered toll bars should be a thing of the past.
