OAMARU DISTRICT COURT.
The first sittings of the Oamaru District Court for the trial of criminal cases was held on the 20th inst before Judge Ward. In the first case,.Regina v. Brown, a charge of stealing a cheque for LlO, a verdict of acquittal was returned. In Regina v. Thomas Davis, the prisoner was charged with assault with intent to commit an unnatural offence at Okakanui. The jury, after au absence

Courts > about three quarters ot an hour,- (punlohe prisoner guilty of “anat<e commit,” &c., but the Judge would pot accept verdict, as under the indictment- fbe •■‘prisoner must either be found “guilty’’or not guilty of “assault with intent.” On reconsideration, the jury returned a verdict of “not guilty.” Antoni Frete, by the advice of his counsel (Mr Julius) pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting one Matheis Oonningham. andjtvas fined L 5. In Regina v. Holmes, a charge of assault with intent to. commit a rape, the jury returned a verdict of guilty npjn the second count,.anil the prisoner was sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labor.
