LIBRARY OF REFERENCE.

The Committee for the formation of a Library of .Reference in Connection with the Otago University, met at the Provincial Council Library at 12.30 to-day. Present: Mr W. A. Tolmie (in the chair), his Honor the Superintendent, the Revs. E. G. Edwards and L). M. Stuart, his Honor Judge Chapman, Professors Sale and Shand, Messrs Bathgate, Bell, E. B. Cargill, E. M‘Glashan, Hislop, Howorth, Rattray, Reynolds, and Turton. On the motion of his Honor the Superintendent, seconded by Mr Bell, Mr E. B. Cargill was appointed treasurer. On the motion of his Honor Judge Chapman, [seconded by Mr Bathgate, it was resolved that the monetary business of the Committee should be transacted through the Bank of Otago. The following resolutions were also agreed to :

“ That a sub-committee be appointed for the purpose of conferring with the University authorities as to the rules and regulations of the Library, of arranging as to the books to be ordered, and of taking the necessary steps towards obtaining contributions of money and books; the sub-committee to consist of the Rev. Mr Edwards, Messrs Bathgate, Macandrev, Bell, Tolmie, Rattray, and Hawthorne—three to form a quorum ; and to report to this Committee.” ‘ 1 That in the event of the sub-cemmittee being able to agree with the University as to the books to be procured, prior to the departure of the next English mail, the sub-com-mittee is empowered to order such books by next mail, to the extent of not exceeding L 250.”

His Honor Judge Chapman gave several admirable hints for the consideration of the Committee of different modes of interesting the public in the Library; and the Committee adjourned sine die.
