M'Gilivray fined os ; Isabella Johnston, 20s or three days imprisonment; Mary Growhurst 10s or 48 hours ; George M. Binnie, 20s or 7 days ; and Colin M'Donald, 40s or 14 days. disorderly conduct. John Thompson, alias Morrison, was charged with riotous conduct in Princes street last night. It appeared from the evidence of Mr Joseph Mills and others, that the prisoner had been assaulting Isabella Johnson, and had succeeded in dragging her for the right-of-way, next to the Newmarket Hotel, into the street, where he almost stripped her naked, at the same time kick ing her severely. When spoken to, he said the woman was his wife ; but when she was appealed to, she denied the truth of his assertion. Seeing that he was about to repeat his violent conduct, Mr Mills interfered, separated them, and sent for a policeman, by whom both were taken in charge. Both were under the influence of liquor. The woman was put into the box and explained the cause of their “difference.” She said she had known the prisoner for five years, and bad lived with him in Dunedin and Port Chalmers. She had got a situation at Shag Point where he visited her, because she sent for him, and then a difference arose out of her coming to town again. She considered he had done nothing to her but what he was justified in doing. Prisoner was fined 40s or three days hard labor. DISOBEYING LAWFUL COMMANDS. Win. Aubrey Smith, late cook of the schooner Jane Anderson, charged with this offence, was let off with a caution, the Bench thinking that he might have labored under the impression that being engaged as cook he vas not bound to do other work. He was fined 40s on two charges of using threatening language.
