Inquest. —Mr W. D. Muvison, acting coroner, held an inquiry at the Oriental Hotel this morning, touching the death of Janies Galbraith, referred to in yesterday’s issue. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony, that deceased died from rupture of a blood vessel. Keturning Good for Evil.—A gentleman rejoicing in the name of William F, Apstcad, has inserted the following advertisement in the Gray Aryus. —He returns good for evil, and blesses the “ patriots who kindled a bush lire in dangerous proximity to his residence : —My thanks to those gentlemen who so kindly assisted to p it out a bush lire in the neighborhood of my house. My blessing on the laud speculators and patriots who set it on lire while a strong wind was blowing.” The Gaol. — The Rev Mr Reid, Wesleyan, who is an accomplished Maori linguist, attended at the gaol on Sunday afternoon, specially requested by Tauroa, the chief, through the Kon Captain Eraser, one of the visiting justices, and celebrated Divine Service in the Maori language. The sermon was exceedingly appropriate and very eloquent. After the conclusion of the service, Tauroa, the chief, held a long korero with the rev gentleman, thanking him, on behalf of the hapu, for his kindness and unceasing attention to their spiritual wants during their term of imprisonment. The chiel Tauroa is considered one of the best orators of the Maories in New Zealand, and was highly complimented by His Honor Mr Justice Johnstone, when he defended himself when tried, in a most e oquent speech, which occupied upwards of four hours in its delivery. The Greymouth Floods. —The net proceeds of the entertainment given, by the Colored Opera Troupe in aid of the sufferers by the floods amounts to L 65, which was handed to tlie Mayor by the troupe’s secretary. —The Grey River Ary us of the 24th ult. says There was a full meeting of the Flood Relief Committee last evening, at Gil mer’s Hotel. Mr W. S. Smith was in the chair. A number of new applications were received, and (hese, with others presented to previous meetings, were considered. To meet the claims entertained, a total of LSOO was voted by the committee, bringing up the sum expended in relief to about LIOOO. Other claims were deferred for further consideration, and a sub-committee w T as appointed to draw up a report of the expenditure of the fund which has been so liberally subscribed to in all parts of the Colony. It was also agreed that the Mayor should telegraph to the different towns whose inhabitants have subscribed to the fund, thanking them for their donations, and requesting them now to close their subscription lists Early Closing Movement. A numerously attended meeting of the committee of the Saturday Half-Holiday Association was held yesterday evening in the lower hall of the Athenaeum, Mr James Spraggon in the chair. Numerous additional lists of names of those pledging themselves not to shop after one o'clock on Saturday, were received. From the general favor with which the movement seems to be received by the public, there is every prospect of the movement being thoroughly successful. After passing several resolutions, and transacting other business, the meeting was adjourned till half-past seven o’clock to-night, and as we unde stand there are large numbers of the various trades anxious to become members of the Association, there will no doubt be a large meeting. 'There are already indications of adhesion to the movement. Messrs Matheson Brothers and B. McLeod and Co. announce that their places of business will close on Saturday at 2 o’clock. We trust that more will follow their example, and thus assist the object of the Early Closing Association. Fire Brigade, —The usual monthly meeting of the Volunteer Fire Brigade was held last evening, at their rooms above the engine station ; Captain Wain in the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr James Lawler was granted two mouths leave of absence. Mr W. M‘Taggart was elected a working member, and Air Saunders an honorary member. Mr T. Wilson was proposed as a working member. Mr E. Putlett having received a letter from the Geelong Fire Brigade, sent it for the perusal of the members. After having been read, it was proposed and carried that the thanks of the Brigade be accorded to that gentleman for forwarding the same. Captain Wain in his report referred to the sad death which had taken place that morning, and that the deceased, Mr J. Galbraith, having been a member of the Brigade, he was desirous to hear the views of the meeting in reference to the funeral arrangements. It was resolved that the funeral should take place on Thursday next, and that the whole of the expenses should be defrayed from the members’ fund—the Brigade to meet at their station at half-past three o’clock, in full working uniform. It was then intimated by the chairman that the deceased would be interred in the piece of ground presented to the Brigade by Mr John Hughes. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Hughes for his presentation. The treasurer acknowledged the receipt of the sum of L 3 from Mr Hammond, an honorary member, as a donation towards the members’ and library funds. It was resolved that a vote of thanks be forwarded to that gentleman for his handsome donation. After transacting other business of no great moment, the meeting broke up— Captain Wain calling the attention of members to the fact that Wednesday evening, the 13th inst., would be practice night, and he also expressed a desire to see every member of the Brigade present at the funeral on Thursday.

By mistake the name of Charles Boulter appeared as defendant in a case of using obscene language in the Mayor’s Court yesterday. The offender was Donald Frazer, A general meeting of the Saturday Half-Holiday Association will be held in the lower hall of the A thcnamm this evening, at 7 30.

It will be seen by the advertisement that the Inspector of Volunteers, Colonel Harrington, is expected to arrive in Otago in a few days to make his annual inspection of the volunteers in Otago. On Saturday there will bo preliminary drill of various companies, particulars of which a v e given in the advertisements ; and it is desirable that every volunteer should make it a point to attend Company Inspection in order that Otago may retain the high position hitherto so deservedly attained. The quarterly meeting of the Otago Yacht Club will be held in the lower hall of the Athciutniin, to-morrow (Wednesday) evening, at 8 o’clock. The results of the examination for Provincial Scholarships will be announced in die University Hall to-morrow (Wednesday) at noon. The usual fortnightly concert in connection with the Total Abstainers Union will be given in the Oddfellows Hall tomorrow (Wednesday) evening at 8 o’clock. The quarterly general meeting of the Otago Licensed Victuallers’ Association will be held at the Fire Brigade Booms this evening at 7-30.
