VOLUNTEERS.

The Artillery Company fired the third competition for their new challenge cup this morning, at the Anderson’s Bay Range, upon the following conditions—viz : shots at rang s of 200, 500, and COO yards ; Hythe position, Wimbledon targets, Government rifles and ammunition, and no sighting shots. The weather was very unfavorable for good shooting, a strong gust of wind from the right front prevailing. Lieut. Viuir is the winner with 54 points, and holds the cup for the ensuing six months. The following are the scores of those above 40 points:—

The third number ot tuo i'o unker Record published at Auckland, snows a decided improvementover previous numbers, although fault can still be found with it for inaccurate information. For instance, there appears in it a statement that Gunner Reid, of the Artillery, is not a Colonial representative this year. A contributor to the paper, “ Viator,” writes I challenge contradiction to my statement that there is not in the whole of New Zealand a properly armed and equipped body ef volunteers, nor have the Government, under the present system, the means of transporting and feeding fifty men for three consecutive days, if they are marched ten miles in the country. An executive head, instead of the political, is the thing required ; and camps and instruction to be held for a fortnight during the fall of each year. Arrangements have been made for a match between No. I Company and the Thames Scottish. The Northern men fired on the 3rd inst, but were unable to complete the ranges, as, when the 600 yards ran,>e was re tched, the smoke from a bush fire totally hid the targets. A return raa" ch was arranged for the Thames men to shoot on the 12th.
