MAYOR’S COURT.
This Day. (Before His Worship the Mayor.) THEFT, William M'Querrie, a lad about 9 years old, was charged with stealing a silver hunt ing wathe, valued at L 4, the property of one Albert Grey, at Green Island, on the Bth instant. The case was formally adjourned to the 25th, to allow Mr Stewart, who had just been instructed to appear for the prisoner, to get up his case. VAGRANCY. Mary and Thomas White were charged with using obscene language. The female defendant was fined 40s, or three days imprisonment. The male defendant did not appear, and a warrant for his apprehension was ordered to issue. Mrs J Macormack was charged with a similar offence. Mr M'Keay appeared for her. His Worship held that no offence had been committed, as the language complained of had not been used within the hearing of passers by, as contemplated by the statute. ASSAULT. Stewart v. Ah Poo, a charge of assault. Mr Hodgkins appeared for the defendant. The complaint, which was laid by the teacher of the North Dunedin School was, that the defendant had thrown a stone at one of the childred. It appeared from the evidence that a number of the boys attending the school were in the habit of molesting the Chinese gardeners adjoining the school when at work, and that complaints to that effect had been lodged with Mr Stewart; farther, that the stone was thrown at some of the boys and accidentally hit the girl. Under these circumstances his Worship dismissed the case on payment of coats.
