MAYOR’S COURT.

This Day. (Before His Worship the Mayor and the Hon. Dr Buchanan, J.P.) DRUXItr.NNESS. Donald M‘Lau o hlaud and John Paxton were each fined 15s; Thos. Steden alias Stevens, 10s ; and Jas, Flaterty, 20s, or three days imprisonment. OFFENCES AGAINST THE BYE-LAWS. Wm. Wynen, for allowing a cow to stray, was fined 5s and costs ; and Alex. Craig, 20s and costs for a similar offence. ASSAULT, Thos. Jennings v. Chas. Jennings.—This was a very painful case, the father charging his son, who is eighteen years old, with assaulting him. The father’s evidence was to the effect that the boy, whom he thought not to be right in his m nd, had oh several occasions ill-treated him and his mother. On the day named in the information he struck him with a large piece of wood, and would have struck him with a pick but for the interference of a man who was working in the shop. He did not wish the boy punished so much as to have him kept out of the way of doing mischief. The statements of the boy, and the evidence of Mr Bain, ranger, gave a very different complexion to the matter. The latter was also of opinion that the boy was not right in his mind. The boy was represented to be a very hard working lad, he being a newspaper runner ; and Mr Bain, who had known him for some time past, said he believed he was driven to it through the intemperance and general conduct of the father. The latter, when the summons was being served on the boy, was in a state of druukeuness ; and this morning he professed his willingness to withdraw the case if the boy gave him 2s 6d, which he refused to do. His Worship said the Bench were of opinion that the boy had been more sinned against than sinning, and the father having neglected to set his son a proper example, could not expect the latter to be a good son to him. Case dismissed. M‘Kay v. M'Kay, and Ben. Clark t. T, H. Thompson, were dismissed for nonattendance.
