RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Yesterday. (Before A. C. Strode, Esq., R.M.) Civil Case. Laing v. Towers and others.—This case was brought to a close in the afternoon of yesterday. The two points for the defence were that there had been no substitution of Towers for the original lessee, and that the tenants had been ejected by the plaintiff. His VVoiship considered that the evidence proved l owers had had the lease transferred to him, and that the evidence as to ejectment was insufficient. Judgment for the plaintiff for the amount with costs. This Day. Bills v. Ridley.—This was a charge of assault. Mr for the prosecution. The complainant and defendant are both cab drivers, and on Sunday afternoon a dispute occurred between them as to the priority of turn at the Water of Leith. The complainant, it appeared, had taken a wrong place on the stand, and defendant twice directed him to take his propsr position, which he refused ; on which the defendant, after threatening to take his wheel off, changed his mind and proceeded to punch him with his fist. This account was confirmed by two witnesses. The defendant was lined 40s and costs, or to go to gaol for a week.
