MAYOR’S COURT.
This Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor.) A TURKEY DISPUTE. The time of the Court was nearly wholly occupied in investigating a dispute as to the ownership of a turkey, which was claimed both by Mr Booth, of Great King street, and Mr M'Quaide, of George street. After hearing the evidence, his Worship ordered that the Turkey, which was in possession of the police, should be given up to Mr Booth. WIFE DESERTION. Geo. Gidfrcy. on reipand, was charged with deserting his wife at Oatnaru. His Worship said that he had received a communication from Mr Parker, R.M., Oamaru, that the woman was willing to accept 15s a week. The defendant said he did not think she deserved to receive any. She had property with a market-garden ; and ho had remitted Ids a week, while h-3 was only earning a LI. His Worship : 1 'must say I think from the information that is before the Bench, that no reasonable cause existed for the issuing of the warrant. It must have been issued almost immediately after the defendant left the district. Ultimately, the defendant agreed to pay Ipa a week, and was discharged. OFFENCES At! AIN ST THE I}yB;LAWB. A sumber of cases were summarily dealt with" In one, a cabman named John Cross was charged with contravening the byelaw which provides that any cabman finding money, &c., lost by passenges in his cab, shall leave the same at the City Council Chambers. Cross, it appears, found 2s 6d, which had been lost by a passenger ; and on the inspector asking him to deliver it up, he denied that he found it, but subsequently admitted he had. He was fined Is and costs, and severely reprimanded.
