The Colonial prizes wil} be fired for during the month of March, 1872, and those for Hide Volunteers, Militia, and Armed Constabulary are as follows : Judging Distance. —Not to exceed COO yards, five shots, second class targets, any position, no trial shot, ties to be fired off shot for shot; prizes, LlO, LB, L 6, L 5, L 3, L2. Skirmishing.— Singe target, 6ft by 2ft, centre 2ft across, one target to each com* petitor; after 10 minutes firing whilst advancing and retiring firing to cease and targets to be examined; any position, no trial shot, one point for each hit added to s jores, tics to be fired off shot for shot; prizes LL2, L 9, LB, L 7, 15, L 4, L 3, L2. Third Set. —2oo yards, five shots, Hythe position, no trial shot, targets 6ft by 4ft with 2ft centre and Sin bull’s-eye, ties to be fired off shot lor shot; prizes LlO, LG, L 4, L 3, L2. Forth Set. —3oo yards, five shots, any position, no trial shot, targets and ties as in the previous set j prizes, LlO, L 6, L 4, L 3, L2. Fifth Set —4OO, 500, and 600 yards, seven ghots at each, any position, no trial shot third class targets; ties as provided tot in the general rules ; prises; L2O, Ll6, LI4, LI3, UO, L 7, L 5, L 5, L 5. Sixth Set for Rati ditv. —200 yards, five minutes from first shot, any position, ties to be fired off as officer commanding may direct; prizes, LlO, LS, L 6, L 5, L 3, L2. Seventh Set.— 2oo, 500 and 600 yards,

seven shots, any position, targets at 200 yards, 6ft by 4ft with 2ft centre and Sin bull’s-eye, at remainining ranges third class targets, trial shots at each range, ties as in general rules ; prizes, Ll2, L 9, LB, L 7, I*s, L 4, L 3, L2. Eighth Set — Running.— 2oo yards, time, five minutes, to commence from first shot, no trial shot, target 6ft by 2ft with 2ft centre acros-, competitor after every shot to double round a post fifty (50) yards in rear of the firing point, ties to be decided as officer commanding may dir. ct : prizes, Ll2, L 9, LS, L 7, L 5, L 4, L 3, L2. The highest aggregate scorer in the foregoing eight matches will be the champion rifle shot of New Zealand for the year 1872, and the following prizes will also be awarded ; Ist highest aggregate score, the £ s, d. There are two sots of extra prizes, which are as follows : First Set. —A match between representatives of the North and South Islands. The ten representatives of each Island who make the highest aggregate scores in the foregoing eight matches to be entitled to compete at 200, 500, and 600 yards, with sevtn shots at each range, and any position ; no trial shot; targets same as at similar ranges in previous matches ; ties as in general rules. Second Set. Marksmen’s prizes for volunteers only who have become marksmen during the year ending 31st March, 1872ranges 700 and B't) yds, with five shots at each; any position; ‘rial shot at each range; targets 8 by 6ft, centiv 6 by 4ft, bull’s-eye 3 by 2ft; ties as laid don n in general rules ; prizes LlO, L 6, L 4. Ihe North and South Island Challenge Cup, and ten new Snider rifles, will be presented to the winning team. The cup to be held by the highest scorer in the winning team until the next competition. If the cup is won two years in succession, or three years at intervals by the same person to become his private property. The highest scorer of each team will receive L 5. All-comers Match.—To be fired after the completion of the Colonial firing. First stage.—Ranges 100 and 200 yards, five shots at each ; prket, LB, and one-half of the entrance fees ; JLS, and a fourth of the entrance fees, and seven other prizes of L2 and LI. Second stage.—soo and 600 yards, five shots at each ; prizes, same as the first six prizes in the preliminary stage. Matches.— A sum of money aot exceeding L 3 per gun on the issue to the qorps, will bp placed at the disposal of the officers commanding corps, to be divided as they may determine; corps to bo divided into detachments of not less than nine men, and in the event of there being a balance of not less than seven men, after the formation of detachments, two men will be selected by lot from those who have competed to make np the detachment, but these men will not be allowed to participate in more prizes than those awarded to one detachment. Ranges —For Armstrong guns, not Jess than lpoo yatd&, for howitzers!' not less than 1200 yards. No prize will be given unless two or more detachments compete.
