Commercial.
The amount of revenue received at the Cus-tom-house on goods cleared for consumption to-day, was £446 19s sd. The small lots of Taieri wheat that are still in the farmers’ hands are easily placed at 5s 3d. Timaru wheat, if prime, is worth 5s the highest rate that can be got. Second class samples are not wanted, fowl wheat, in parcels, can he disposed of at 3s to 3s 2d; small trade lots, 3s 4d to 3s 6d. Oats are unchanged : there is little enquiry from the millers, and dealers are fully stocked with feeding lots. Barley, both in feeding and malting kinds, is in much better demand, and holders are not inclined to press sales. Potatoes are very scarce, and L 5 to L 5 15s is readily obtainable for any in the market. Reliable brands of flour have a good trade sale at Ll3 10s; others at Ll3; inferior ranges from L 9 Ids to LI 1, with a fair enquiry. Bran has only a limited sale at L2 15s to the trade. Pollard, scarce. Wheat, 5s to 6s 3d ; oats, 2s to 2b 2d; barley, feeding; 2s 4d to 2s Od ; malting, 3s Cd to 3s 9d; potatoes, L 5 to L 5 15s ; flour, Ll3 ids', oatmeal, Ll4; pearl barley, 149 ; straw, L2 10s, bay, L 4 10s; chaff, L 4 10s; bran, L2 15s ; pollard, L 3 15s; carrots, L2 10s; turnips, LI 10s. A. Mercer reports for the week ending Oct. 21.—Retail prices only: Fresh butter, in £ and lib prints, 8d to lOd per lb, according to quality; fresh butter, in lumps, 7d to 8d per lb, according to quality ; salt and powdered butter (new), 9d per lb; salt butter, in kegs (new season), Sid per lb cash, and in very fair demand. Cheese is still very plentiful, and the prices about the same as last quotations; for good quality, Cd to 8d per lb. Side and rolled bacon, smoked and otherwise, 8d to lOd per lb ; Colonial hams, Is per lb ; English hams, Is 4d per lb, but little demand ; the same applies to English cheese. Eggs are very plentiful and in good demand, lOd per dozen.
The sale of imported horses, ex Claud Hamilton, by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. at the Provincial Sale Yards to-day, attracted a large attendance of buyers. The demand for good draught horses was good, and the prices realised were from L3O to LSB, the competition being keen. Some very good Provincial stock sold at fair rates. Light hacks not much in demand.
