Taraati Rewiti, a leading chief of the Ngatwhatua, is dead. The Nebraska sailed to-day with a large cargo from Sydney and numerous passengers. A man at the Thames was attacked by a cow and had his leg broken, A man named Samuel Atkins, while on his way to Onehunga, attempted to commit suicide, when in a fit of delirium tremens, by discharging the contents of a gun into his side. A serious wound was caused. He used ten £1 notes as wadding. A man was killed by the bursting of JJunvill’s boiler. The wheat market is very dull. Canterbury wheat fetches from 5s to 5s 3d. Flour is unsettled ] Auckland brands fetch LI 4 15s. The share market is dull. Caledonians, LI 15 ] Thames, L 23 ; Tookeys, L2B ; Moanatairiris, L 4 ss ; and All Nations, L 5 15s. INVERCARGILL, Oct. 11. A tremendous fire occurred here this morning, destroying the premises of the Bank of Otago and ten other buildings. An extensive fire broke out in Tay street, Invercargill, at three o’clock this morning, and destroyed the block of buildings extending from the Bank of New Zealand to the Bank of Otago. A doubt is expressed as to how the fire originated, but it was first seen in a small space between the Bank of Otago and Hunter and Hawkshaw’s premises. The Bank of New Zealand was only saved after extraordinary exertions, and the side of the building now presents a very scorched appearance. The following are the premises totally destroyed :— Bank of Otago: Loss L 2500 ] insured for LI 000 in the Liverpool and London office, and for LSOO in the Royal. The hooks were saved, having been kept in the strong room of the Bank. Hunter and Hawshaw, grocers, £1500 ; Dal wig, cabinet-maker, £3oo] Broad, watchmaker, £9OO ; Hatch, chemist, £I7OO ] Garrick Club Hotel, £lso] Ooutts, tailor, £250 ; Mitchell, bootmaker, £3oo] Moffat, cordial manu facturer, £7OO. The New Zealand Insurance Company has a risk for £4OO and the Victoria for £7OO.
