Commercial —Floyir, LI 6 to LIG 15,s Wheat at auction brought nothing higher than 6s 7id. and was withdrawn, but was sold privately at 6s 9d to 6s lOd nett cash. Oats are inactive :' common sorts bring 3s 3J to 3s 4-id. Prime sorts are scarce, but saleable at 3s 8d to 3s 9d. Adelaide advices, dated the 16th, say 5s 3d is offered for wheat and refused. There have been no transactions or inquiry for country flour, Shipping.— Glencoe, for Dunedin, sailed from Hobart Town, August 16. August 17. The Scott Centenary was celebrated in all the chief towns of Australia and Tasmania. The Victorian Tariff Bill has finally passed through Committee in the Assembly. The brewers agitate against a double duty on malt, but the department is inflexible. Mr Parkes, the representative of Hall’s line, is now in Melbourne. In addition to the L 15,000 voted by the Sydney Parliament, the South Australian Government is to ask for a subsidy in its favor. For the service with Melbourne as the terminus, Victoria is asked to pay L2(),QQO. The servj.ee ly gjydnpy, LeVuka, and Honolulu is tp bp done in thirty-three days, pud from Melbourne to Frisco and to Liverpool in forty-six days. Adelaide. The Assembly has decided by the casting vote of the Speaker to sell country lauds on credit at LI per. acre. There has been a rich discovery of copper near Wilcauuia, on the ingSydney. A prisoner in the Paramatta Gaol says he found a deposit of Leichardt’s papers in Central Australia,- and offers to find them if taken to Northern Australia. The account sales of the first butter shipments from Sydney to England show an average only of 50s per cwt. Later sales went up to 90s. The Australian papers are singularly barren of news. Wellington, August 25, The Wellington Club give a dinner to Mr Vogel on the 29tb. A petition is circulating by the assurers in the Mutual Provident Society, asking the Assembly to grant them the same privileges as is accorded to assurers under the Government system. Mr J. has been quiet daring the past week. There has been no alteration in quotations. Farmers are taking advantage of the continual fine weather, by putting in crops.
