DR. MORAN AND THE BISHOP’S OATH.

To the Editor. . Sir, —Your correspondent “Omega" has at last acknowledged, what I had suspected irony the first, that;were it not for my efforts to, obtain justice, for Roman Catholics in the matter of education, - 1 should notTfave been assailed so bitterly. r Omega ” says j—- “ Mr I should not have taken up my pen to expose the persecuting, spirit of Koman Catholicism but for the claim for State aid that Dr Moran is somewhat arrogantly putting forth for Roman Catholicism.” Precisely : I have' thought, jso from the beginning. “ Omega ” washes me to,fell him what sense T attach to “ follow, perie? veringly heretics ” ; he seeiiis to thinkitcah only be “to imitate or punish them.” Is there no other way ? Might I not follow them- pcrseveringly to win them back 7 and might 1 not fight against their errors ? If • ‘ Omega ” will do me the honor of calling on me, I shall be most happy to show him hj >vr to translate the sentence which has given him so much trouble. But “ Omega,” in a .serio comic way, undertakes to prove his inode of translating perseqii'ir correct from a curse. The argument is this, and it is certainly unique—“ Perse jiiaf means to persecute, because there is a curse in -the Roman Pontifical.” This is a non, seq inter, and of course “ Omega’’ only means to be facetious. As to what he calls a curee he vj\VV hwA pemethivig as strong in the Byble. But he atthets to bs shocked. The curse, however, is only in’the event of non-repent-ance for a great, crime. Yet he is not horrid d, I dare say, at the Civil Government inflicting a much more severe and substantial punishment for crime, whether repeated for or not. I am, &c., .T P. Moran, Bishop of Dunedin. August 2, 1871.
