DR. MORAN IN REPLY.

To the Editor. Sir,—My answer to your correspondent “ Omega” will be very short, because I shall not permit myself to be diverted from the main point by extraneous considerations. ‘ • Omega ” remits the question in reference to the Canons to the Bishop of Nelson : “ Omega’s ” prudence is to be admired. But he takes his stand against me on the meaning of the word “ persmptar.” With his long dissertation about Dr Gumming and Cardinal Wiseman’s secretary I have nothing o do. lam a British subject, and at my consecration 1 took the oath according to the foim in the Roman Pontifical, less lam not hound to persecute. “Omega 1 * calls my tra slation of the word “persenuar” silly. Well, I hope for the credit of the place that “ Omega” does not belong to the staff of the High School or University. There is no use, I know, in referring “ Omega ” to passages from the best Latin authors illustrative of thp meaning of the word “persequar"; but if he will be so good as to consult Dr Smith’s Latin Dictionary, he will fin/, that the first, the primary meaning of the word “ persequar ” is, to follow verse veringly, and perhaps feel somewhat ashamed. I refer to the LatinEnglish Dictionary, by William Smith, LL.D., Classical Examiner to the University of Loudon, and Editor of the Dictiouaries of Greek and Latin Antiquities, Biography and Geography : Edit, 1867. I am, &c., f P. Mqran, B.ishqp of Dunedin. 3lst July, ISfL
