Nelly O’Neill, aged two and a-half years, was sent to the Industrial School for seven years. a r.visn i. casi;. Agnes Weir, aged Id, was charged with stealing a, petticoat. According to the evidence, the housekeeper of Mr John M‘Crego r, 0.10., had occasion to leave the house for a short time one day last week, placing the key in a spot known to the inmates of I he house. The plant was sprung by the prisoner, who having gained access to the house, appears to have proceeded to carry off what she could conveniently lay hold of. When the family baker called on his usual rounds, the prisoner olliciated at the hall door as though she were one of the house, and the man of dough thinking her appearance there strange, reported the circumstance to the housekeeper. In the meantime several things including a quantity of choice wines had been missed, but the only thing the girl would own to having stolen was the petticoat. From the statements made by the police, it appeared that she was before the Court about six months ago, when she was charged with stealing a diamond ring, hut was then discharged with a caution on account of her youth. Enquiries instituted by tbc detectives, elicited the fact that she had frequently pawned articles in the name of her parents ; although they had been spoken to on the subject. The Commissioner of Police thought it would be a pity if the girl were associated with the incorrigiblcs of the gaol, and would see if she could not be
kept separate. The Mayor said he would he sorry to think the parents had been teaching the child to steal; but the circumstances certainly gave the case that appearance. The prisoner was remanded to tomorrow.
