She left Melbourne at G p.m. on the 25th, and brings 1G cabin and U steerage passengers, together with IG6 tons of cargo for all ports. Passenger list : Mr. Ardell, Misses Ardell (2), Miss Smith, Mrs. Hardy, Miss Hardy, Mr?. M‘Bengali, Messrs. Bargi, Heliker, Burstall, Cairns, and Hay man, Melbourne, May 25. The birthday levee yesterday was poorly attended. There being no accommodation for ladies none were present. The volunteer review was the finest over held in the colony, lliree thousand volunteers were on parade, and there was a very large attendance ol spectators, including the Governor. Alexander, belonging to the Engineer Corps, was blown to atoms through an explosion of a mine. The Somersetshire arrived 55 days out, but having small pox on board has been placed in quarantine. The Tariff is much condemned, and and the. Assembly is debating the Budget with much opposition. Commercial —Markets firm. Flour XI7. Wheat, South Australian, 7s 8d ; New Zealand, 6s 8d; oats, 3s 4d to 3s 7d. At Adelaide wheat is firmly hold at Gs. Id.
The Hon. IT. Parkes Ims interviewed the Adelaide Chamber of Commerce ; also the South Australian Government in reference to Mr. Kail’s Californian mail service, but nothing decisive having been done, he sailed per Goorong for Melbourne. There are apprehensions for the safety of the ship Columbus, now 104 days out. The Mayor of Adelaide was accidentally knocked down by a carriage last week. The New South Wales Assembly is debating the estimates. A Bill has passed the second reading in the Queensland House of Representatives, having for its object the amalgamation of the branches of the legal profession. A similar enactment is likely to be passed by the New South Wales Parliament. It is reported that the Russian frigate Nitray, is on an exploring expedition to New Guinea. A vessel from the South Seas reports at Sydney that a white woman was seen on the beach of New Britain. The birthday ball and review at Sydney were successful. The schooner Emma was wrecked near Noeuma, Invercargill, May 31. Oh Monday night the schooner Lady Darling was floated off Riverton beach. She is considered safe, and will be taken into Riverton on the first opportunity. The over due crafts for the New River, have arrived.
