THE TELEGRAPH.
An interesting return of the number of messages transmitted during the year ending March 3lst last, and the revenue received, is published in a recent Gazette. The uniform tariff of Is per ten words came into force on the Ist April, 1870, and the hrst month showed an increase of 5000 messages, as compared with the same month in the preceding year. There was, however, a deficiency of L 244 19s 5d in the revenue received. The number of messages sent continued to increase steadily, and the deficiency in receipts to decrease, until in July the latter was only LBS 10s 9d. In August the increase in the number of messages sent, as compared with the corresponding month of the previous year, was 9074, and for the first time there was, under the pheaptar ff, an increase of revenue amountingto 1/283 9s 2d. There has since been a steady increase, and the total receipts under the new tariff amounted to 1/2,707 13s 4d more than the receipts for the previous year, when the high tariff was in operation. This is very gratifying, and but confirms the opmion we gave when the tariff was first announced.
