CITY COUNCIL.

The City Council met this afternoon.

The Works Committee’s report contained the following clause : “ Your Committee, on the invitation of the Mayor, have enquired into the circun • stauces connected with the tenders for pipe!* ing, &c., the Council’s new offices, and a e perfectly satisfied with his Worship's expl,- ■ nation and the action he took in the matter. In order, however, to prevent any dissatisfaction on the part of any portion of the public, they u ould recommend that in future every tender be publicly advertised and opened in the usual way.” The Mayor stated he had had an interview with a member of the Government, and he had been led to believe the Government were quite willing to assist, by prison labor, the Council in improving the Southern Recreation Ground, if thej Council co-operated by a money expenditure. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.

The following motion was unanimously carried on the motion of Mr. Walter

“That His Worship the Mayor, by request of this Council, and on behalf of the citizens of Dunedin, convey to the Captain and officers of the Nevada, our hearty and sincere welcome, on the occasion of this, iheir first visit to our shores, and also express a hope that an event of such importance, so successfully inaugurated, may commercially and socially, cement still firmer the bond of friendship which happily exists between the two countries.”
