ARRIVAL OF THE NEVADA.
The arrival of the pioneer mail steamship Nevada was anxiously looked for this morning, as it was publicly kn wn that that fine ship had left Lyttelton yesterday afternoon, but the severe S.W. gale w .ich had prevailed during last night and this morning must have caused a heavy sea outside, and prevented her arrival at so early an hour as was anticqiated, Despite the gale there was not long to wait, for at about 11 a.m. a steamer to the northward was signalled, and shortly afterwards the Harbor Master, accompanied by several gentlemen, proceeded in the Geelong to meet tiic Nevada on her arrival at the Heads, and at 12'i5 she hove in sight, her immense length and the ponderous beam working over the deck being clearly observable at i’ort Chalmers with the aid of the telescope, A few minutes delay, evidently to take mi board a pilot, and the Nevada, at almost dead low water, crossed the bar, and entered the harbour at
12 - 27, steaming rapidly up to an anchorage at 1 p.m. The fact that the Nevada witli her great length was able to come into the harbor at dead low water, is a complete answer to the croakers who have so vanntingly declared for some time past that there was not sufficient water at the entrance to allow of large vessels coming in. In several parts of the Port and of the City bunting was displayed in honor of the event.
