Napier, April 28. The remains of Capt. St. George, which were buried eighteen months ago, where he fell at I’orutn, were removed to Napier and buried in the cemetery yesterday afternoon, with military honours. There was a great public funeral; the whole of the militia and volunteer companies turned out, and places of business were closed the whole afternoon. The ceremony began at one o’clock and Lasted till after dark. A magnificent meteor was observed at ten o’clock last night. Tarangua, April 28. The other day Col. Moule discovered that the last overland mail hence to the Thames had been intercepted and detained by Te Hira. The mail contains chiefly government cheques (not negotiable) and official documents. The Lord Ashley arrived early this morning, from Southern Ports, with 30 tons of cargo, «fec. Leaves at 12 noon for Auckland. The material for the extension of the telegraphic line to Katikati, arrived by the L >rd Ashley.
Nelson, April 28. The schooner Twilight, trading to K;dpara, foundered in the recent gale. Captain Mciklojohn was saved, but two of the seamen, named Peterson and Lewis, were drowned. Mr. George Webster, of Hokianga, well known in Auckland commercial circles, died suddenly of apoplexy. Arrangements are making for a grand reception and luncheon to the officers of the Nevada. The Governor is expected to be present. The Caledonian Company lodged 12G9ozs. for the week ending the 25th inst., and besides 25 cwt. of specimen,taken out and crushed at the Inverness battery, which went 2ozs. to the ton. The share market is quiet on the whole. Caledonians have sold at LlO5 ; Alburnias at L2 5s ; Waitematas at 15s : Cures at 12s; Otagos at C6s ; Mona tails at 455.
News has been received at Sydney of a fearful hurricane at the Fijis. Great damage was dene at Levuka town, and to the shipping in harbor. The new theatre and several houses were blown down—the total damage to the town being estimated at L2OUO. The Zephyr, Kestrel, Black Eagle, and other schooners were driven ashore, and the steamer Wainui slightly damaged by collision.
