On Saturday morning, John Pascoe, a shareholder in the Nugget and Cornish Company, Upper Shotover, was dragged into the machinery and fearfully mutilated. Death was instantaneous. A verdict of accidental death was returned. Auckland, April 8. The Wonga Wonga left for Honolulu yesterday, with 92 passengers and j very large mails. Sad intelligence is being received daily about the late gales. The Emma Jane, from Oamaru, arrived yesterday almost a wreck, A portion of her cargo of wheat had to be thrown overboard in order to secure the safety of the ship. The remainder is much damaged. The schooner Saucy Lass, which left Lyttelton on March 21, has not yet arrived. She was last seen in the gale, and it is feared she has foundered with all hands. Other vessels that were out in the gale are missing. The Eliza, a whaler, encountered the gale off the coast, had two men washed overboard, the boats smashed, and the vessel was much damaged. She has gone to Hobart Town for repairs. Several fatal mining accidents are reported to have occurred at the Thames on the sth. A. land slip occurred in the Morning Star Claim, by which Mrs Riley and child were buried alive. Her husband and three other children had a narrow escape. A late Sydney telegram, dated the Ist, states that an influential deputation from the Sydney Chamber of Commerce waited upon Sir James Martin respecting the desirability of a subsidy being granted by the Government to a line of mail steamers between Sydney and San Francisco, by way of Brisbane and the Fijis. Sir James declined to do anything without the action of the Legislature. A subsidy of LIO,OOO for the past twelve months’ service passed the Assembly. The Government declined to acknowledge the present trip of the Wonga, or to send mails except in private hands.

Arrived.—Ngariro, from Rorotonga ; Prince Alfred, from Tahiti; Phoebe and Rangatira, from the South. The barque Fanningham sailed for New York with a cargo of flax and gum valued at L 52,000.

Alexandra via Auckland, April 3. The following is a copy of Whitiora’s letter to Colonel Lyon, furnished to Greville’s agent. The second contract for the construction of the North Eastern Pailway, about sixty miles, has been let for L.315,000. A meeting of Mr Duthie’s creditors has been held. The ascertained liabilities of the estate are L 0.50 0; the assets (including a claim of L 3,000 on Burke’s estate), L 8,500. An offer of 5s in the L was not entertained.

The barque Robert, from New York, left the bay yesterday, with the balance of her cargo, for Dunedin. The Balgouris, from Mauritius, brings dates to February 23 th, The markets had not been affected by the English news ; but shipping was scarce. Freights were expected to advance. The David Anderson sailed on the same date for Melbourne, and was to be followed by the Miss Kilmansogg, the Princess Alice, the Pacific, and the Stranger. The Melrose had arrived, to load back to Sydney. SYDNEY. Six vessels are on the berth for Fiji. The City of Melbourne is to sail for California on the 4th May ; her route has not yet been determined upon, but it will probably be via Fiji, to alternate with the Suez mail.
