The Driver Libel Case.— Mr A. M‘Leod was to-day committed for trial for causing to be published the libellous placard on Mr Driver, We believe that bail was rob found, and that Mr M'Leod was committed to gaol to await his trial. When the judgment of the Magistrate was made known, his friends left the Court.
Princess Theatre. Consequent upon the foul weather there was a very poo,attendance at the theatre last night. We perceive that this evening is annomneed as the last on which the “ Lancashire Lass ” will be played. The opportunity should not be lost by those who have not yet seen this well acted drama The ■“ Octoroon ”is underlined as being in active preparation, and will he produced in a few- days. Testimonial to Mr A, H. Lakeman. —Mr J. Weston, of Manse street, has executed a very beautiful illuminated testimonial to Mr A. H. Lakeman, late member of the Committ.ee and Honorary Secretary to the A the men in, now in Christchurch. It is a copy of the resolution passed gt the meeting on the 30th January of this year, thanking him for his services, and is alike .elegant in design and tasteful in workmanship.
The Elections. Notwithstanding the very unpropitious state .of the {weather List night, the electors resident in the Tomahawk mustered in considerable force to hear Mr Seaton explain the various subjects he had supported during the last Council, (10 well as tiiose lie would he prepared to advocate jf again returned as their mcypher. The electors manifested their approval of the action taken by Mr Seaton, hy frequently applauding him during his ad(,lrc c s ; and wound up by a motion, proposed by Mr Miller, seconded hy Mr Harrison, “That this part of the district has every confidence in Mr Se.aton, and resolves every one should vote for him,’' which was carried by great acclimation. A vote of thanks to the chairman brought the meeting to an end.
The Dunedin Naval Brigade will muster for commanding officer’s parade this evening, at seven o’clock, in front of the Custom House.
