The Races commenced to-day at Wallacetown. Business is interrupted. The second day, to-morrow, will be observed as a holiday.
Wellington, March 16
- At the patent slip meeting yesterday, Sir Charles Clifford’s explanations on the part of Messrs Kennard gave great satisfaction. A committee was appointed, and there can be no doubt that the slip will go on. Lieut.-Colonel Moule telegraphs from Maketu yesterday that he has not been informed of any violent stoppage of the Tauranga mail, and does not believe the newspaper reports. The state of the weather is sufficient to account for non-receipt of mails. Commissioner Clarke agrees with him, A resolution was passed unanimously by the Provincial Council last night, in favor of selling land on deferred payments.
Napier, March 16,
The steamer Napier lias been got off Wairoa Beach, and arrived here today.
Wanganui, March 15. Major Finnirnore is in the held for the Superintendency. He is pledged to the abolition of Provincialism, and will receive the unanimous support of the Wanganui and Rangitikei districts. He has a fair chance of being returned.
