SOUTH WARD.
To the Editor,
Snt,—l desire to call the attention of the City Councillors, the ratepayers of South Ward, and the ratepayers generally, to the works which are in contemplation in South Ward. In my humble opinion, Sir, the money is not being put to the best use, as there are places much more in need of ke bing and channelling than those where kerb stones and stones for channelling are being laid down. I mentioned the matter this afternoon to his Worship the Mayor, an l he did not say that I was wrong, but merely said “ that it was an improvementgrantel, and it would be an improvement to have all the wards paved if we had the “ needful,” but till we are in a position to lay kerbing and channelling in all the streets, I contend, sir, that we ought to attend to those first where the nee I is greatest. Wi.’h all due respect to the united wisdom of the City Council 1. would say that there are places, such as the north side of Manor place, between Melville street and Hope street; or Maitland street, where you require a run to enable you to step off the street on to the pavement—you may climb up in two steps if you are fortunate enough to come to a place where ;hc edge has been worn round; or Maitland street at the extreme south end, which stand more in need than Lees street, from Manor place to Jones street, or the upper end of Walker street. In those portions a very vary small proportion of surface water does at any time rim, and yet thei e are sigm that they are to have a first claim on the present allocation. Do yon ask me why? My dear sir, I cant inform you—- “ it will be an improvement,” remark that. Yours, &c., Reform. Maitland street, 4th March, IS7I.
