MAYOR’S COURT.
This Day. (Before his Worship the Mayor.) KATE. Joseph Carey, a convicted thief, was charged with having, at Dunedin, on the 19th instant, committed a rape upon Isabella Esplin, aged eight years. The evidence of Dr Hulme was to the effect that he had examined the child, and found no marks of violence upon her person. There were only appearances not unusual in children. A rape might have been committed, hut he cpuld see no proof < f it. Prisoner was remanded until to morrow. SLY GROG SELLING. John Keith was charged on the information of George Luinb, revenue officer, with uulawfnffy selling a quantity of beer. The case brpke down, the evidence for the def nee allowing that the beer had been purchased at a licensed house. The case was dismissed, the informant being mulcted in costs. A similar charge preferred against David Comrie, was dismissed, it being proved that the beer bad been sold by defendant as servant for one O’Neill, a licensee. James M‘Vicar was fjqcd Li) and costs.
